ABOUT ALEXIS

Alexis Southall is a leading voice in Fusion Bellydance, recognised internationally for her depth of knowledge, precision of technique, and commitment to artistic integrity. A teacher, choreographer, performer and producer, she has been invited to teach in 23 countries, working with dedicated dancers who seek not just movement, but mastery. She is known for her precise technique, flawless musicality and her generosity as an instructor.

Rooted in a strong lineage, Alexis began her studies in Egyptian dance in 2006 with Karen Price, and has since trained extensively with many of the most influential artists in fusion and MENAHT dance forms. Her work is informed by ongoing study across Middle Eastern, North African, Hellenic and Turkish traditions, alongside Jazz and Street Dance styles. This breadth of training underpins a practice grounded in respect for source cultures, while contributing thoughtfully to the evolution of fusion dance.

Known for her clean technique, musicality and attention to detail, Alexis has become a sought-after mentor for serious dancers. Her teaching goes beyond steps and choreography, guiding students to refine their technique, deepen their understanding, and develop a distinctive artistic voice within the form.

She is widely regarded as a key figure in the development of the UK fusion bellydance community, having trained and influenced many of its leading performers. In 2015, she created one of the UK’s first comprehensive training programmes for fusion dancers, designed to support long-term, structured development. The programme ran for seven years, with an advanced level introduced in 2019, attracting committed dancers from across the UK and beyond. In 2020, she was awarded funding from Arts Council England to expand her teaching online, increasing accessibility to high-level training.

As a performer, Alexis has collaborated with internationally respected companies and artists, including UNMATA, Olivia Kissel’s HYBRID Dance Project, and Ambrosia Dance Company. She toured Europe with Bellydance Evolution’s Alice in Wonderland, directed by Jillina Carlano, bringing her work to large-scale theatrical audiences. She has also collaborated on performances with esteemed artists such as Jill Parker, Ashley Lopez and Zoe Jakes.

Her choreographic work has been commissioned internationally, including Paradiso for Francesca Pedretti’s La Divina Commedia in Rome. She is also the founder of the Juniper Project and Juniper Collective, which have brought together over 200 dancers to create and present original work across the UK, USA and Italy. Her full-length production Juniper Ascending reached a global audience through a successful crowdfunded online release.

Based in Wolverhampton, UK, Alexis leads Juniper Dance & Fitness School and an established online studio, offering in-depth training for dancers worldwide. She is also the producer of the long-running Infusion Emporium festival and former co-producer of Gothla UK. Alongside her teaching and creative work, she has contributed extensively to dance writing, including publications with Zameena and the National Arabic Dance Association.

Alexis holds a PhD in Management, specialising in work psychology, and continues to contribute to academic research alongside her work in dance. Her approach to teaching is shaped by this dual expertise – combining analytical insight with embodied practice.
